Robert Smith-Barry of Marbury – the man who taught the world to fly

The next meeting of the Society will be held on Tuesday, 13 January at 7.30 pm at the Weaverham Primary Academy on Northwich Road.

This month Clive Brooks, a local historian, will be giving us an oversight of Robert Smith-Barry and his flying exploits. Robert Smith-Barry was one of the first officers in the new Royal Flying Corps formed in August 1912 and was subsequently in its successor, the Royal Air Force. He developed the “Gosport System” used to instruct pilots so that they could safely learn to fly. It was said that he was “the man who taught the air forces of the world how to fly”.

I look forward to seeing you on 13 January 2026.
