Today, 6 September, is National Read a Book Day, an excuse to get comfortable and delight in a good read. One of life’s greatest pleasures! Then you can plan ahead for the coming heritage season.
To start, this coming Monday, 7 September, the Frodsham & District History Society have their September meeting.
The speaker is Mike Tingle and he will be talking about the Lion Salt Works, so a subject of local interest for us. The meetings are held in the Main Street Church in Frodsham and start promptly at 7.45 pm.
From 11 to 20 September it is Heritage Open Days season, the nationwide festival which is given by local volunteers to showcase England’s free, sometimes hidden, historical sites. Details can be found on this link Heritage Open Days 2026: Free Events Across England – Bscw
As part of this offering on Saturday, 19 September, the Weaverham History Society is giving free guided tours of St Mary’s Parish Church from 10-1 pm. The bell ringers will also be in attendance so you can ascend the tower to see the bell loft. There will also be a guided walk of the village based on the Blue Plaque Walk starting at 2 pm.
Also on that day from 9.30 am – 1 pm Helsby Community Association has a Heritage Open Day event at the Helsby Community Centre, Lower Robin Hood Lane. Admission is free.
Jim Lloyd will be showing new images of bygone Helsby and Alvanley from his collection, with contributions from F&DHS, Helsby Hillside WI and Helsby Library.
And finally, some of you may have visited the Roman dig taking place recently on Castle, to see the finds and chat to the volunteer archaeologists. It was a splendid opportunity to see local history at the tree roots (rather than grass roots as the Roman layer is quite a long way down!) and it is hoped that there will be further developments in future months.
