The History and Making of Walking Sticks

At the June meeting of the Society our speaker will be Geoff Williams, who will be telling us all about walking sticks. From the 17th century, a walking stick became an essential part of the European gentleman’s wardrobe. Voltaire, who proclaimed that he lived a life free from fashionable nonsense, was said to own 80 sticks. It is thought that the fashion may have originated with King Louis XIV of France, who used a walking stick, maybe because he wore high heels. Geoff will be bringing along a number of examples, though not the stick once owned by Louis XIV which had an eagle knob which was set with twenty-four diamonds.

As usual the meeting will be held at 7.30 pm at the Weaverham Primary Academy, Northwich Road, Weaverham, CW8 3BD on Tuesday, 10 June and I look forward to seeing you then.
