Extracts from "Old Weaverham, A Pictorial History by the Weaverham History Society"
HEALTH AND HYGIENE:
It was not until 1838 that Wcaverham had its first resident surgeons, Charles Manifold and Samuel Smith. This was due to a provident dispensary being established under the patronage of Lady Wilbraham But the most famous of all Wcaverhams surgeons was Joseph William Smith (below). Born in 1843,one of several sons of Doctor Samuel Smith, he was known for miles around. He was in his time a county and parish councillor, county magistrate, chairman of Weaverham Grammar School, Chairman of Weaverham Electricity Supply Co., member of Northwich Military Tribunal, member of Northwich Salt Compensation Board and Chairman of several other committees. He never charged patients who could not afford his fees and was known to be a very compassionate man.
On Christmas Day 1907 he was presented with a Motor Car with accessories as a tribute of affection and esteem from hundreds of subscribers from all the surroundinu villages. Weaverham villagers donated £151.19s.Od.
The picture above shows Doctor Smith and his car outside his house with Willy Robinson. his Chauffeur. Ivy House (right) was the home and surgery to Doctor Smith and his father before him. It continued being a Doctor's house through to the 1970s. The road alongside Ivy House was named Smith's Lane after Doctor Smith who died in April 19l6 at the age of 72.
