Extracts from "Old Weaverham, A Pictorial History by the Weaverham History Society"
High Street was the centre of commercial activity in the village.
Poplar Cottage (probably late 15th century) is perhaps the most well-known feature of today's High Street. Originally a farmhouse, it has a very small room on the ground floor which was in times past called a 'Birth Chamber', the belief being "that a new born child must always he carried upstairs before he goes down or he will not raise in life." (Christina Holes - Traditions and Customs of Cheshire).
For over a century (1840-1942), Poplar Cottage was occupied by a family named Bebbington who were cabinetmakers and wood carvers, the last member being Charles Bebbington who was Church Sexton and Parish Clerk at the Parish Church for 39 years. From 1942 to 1981 it was occupied by Cyril Stockton who had trained with Charles Bebbington.
