On 10th August 2005 the society visited Eyam. Eyam is known as the "Derbyshire Plague Village", because when the plague reached Eyam in 1665 the Reverand Mompesson persuaded the villagers to isolate themselves from each other and from contact with neighbouring villages. When the plague ended in 1666 260 villagers had died. |
In Eyam Parish Church, famous for the Saxon crosses in the church yard, we listened to a talk on the history of the plague in Eyam For more information on Eyam see http://www.derbyshireuk.net/eyam.html After the talk we had a good lunch in the Rookery Tea rooms. Some chose to bring their own: Lunchtime at Eyam |

After lunch we went to Stainsby Mill |
Stainsby Mill has fully working machinery dating from 1850 |
|
The Mill is on the Hardwick Estate. After a tour of the Mill we visited Hardwick Hall which is just only about a mile away. |
