Imagine the importance of carrying a document with a name like that. '—rf . v; ;•
Many pitifully poverty-stricken cases were relieved from the church's funds as the years passed by which tell their own story, but arc too numerous to relate here. The items for relieving the licensed beggars and wanderers occur very frequently :— .
1654. Given to Five Parsons which came with a Briefe with Mr. Marbury's hand att and odier Justices. 00 .00 09
1654. Given to an Irishman and his company that were almost twenty and had a pass for rehefe in their journie to their countrie. 00 01 03
Space forbids me giving furdier examples of hospitality to ringers and others.. Small wonder Peter Warburton protested, as sometimes it seemed to be overdone, but it was a case of " the Law allows and the Court awards it," and the spirit of the times cxcuscd it.
